| The City of Oxford "I wonder anybody does anything at Oxford but dream and remember, the place is so beautiful..." (W. B. Yeats) Oxford is a city steeped in antiquity and learning. Housing the world-class university the opportunity for academic progress is paramount. This is reflected through the many famous museums as well as the numerous art galleries and theatres. As a student-town the demographic is young and the atmosphere vibrant and cosmopolitan, with a wonderful variety of traditional pubs, cafes and bars, souvenir shops and high street stores. 'Oxford English' is the language of business and media communication, and an excellent chance to improve on pronunciation. Famous Oxonians include J. R. R. Tolkein who was a professor at the University and lived in Oxford for most of his life. Here he wrote the wonderful Lord of the Rings Trilogy and The Hobbit. |

| With his close friend,
C. S, Lewis, author of The Chronicles of Narnia and
several other famous writers, they made up a society called 'The Inklings'
and you can visit their famous watering hole, The Eagle and Child where
they would regularly meet up. This is situated in St Giles, a broad tree-lined
thoroughfare in the heart of the city centre. For Harry Potter fans visit Christchurch College which houses the great banqueting hall of Hogwarts in the films. This college also supplied the inspiration for Lewis Carroll's infamous story of Alice in Wonderland and Philip Pullman wrote and set his trilogy His Dark Materials in the murky, spooky back streets of the city. |
